Masterclass

1800's
1861 photo by French photographer Edouard Denis Baldus called Vienne St. Colombe offers an interesting view of architecture. With the bridge as the center of the photo, there is great shadow and leading lines.

A photograph of the Union army in Washington D.C. taken by Mathew B. Brady in 1865 has great leading lines that you can tell where the army is coming from, and the blur makes it real.

1900-1950
Basque Oarsman, a 1931 photo taken by José Ortiz-Echagüe, creates an affect where I feel as if I can make out this man's whole life story, created by the intense look in his eye matched with the positioning of his hands.

1942 photo by Lee Miller called Roland Penrose with Mumps is a very real photo. It shows what people do when they are sick and not looking their best, and the tilt of the camera adds to the sense of sickness.

1950 photo taken outside Otto Steinert's window in Germany creates an interesting effect on the angle and peculiar shape of these trees. Each tree seems to have its own angle that gives it a personality.

1951-1990
1955 photo by Bob Willoughby of James Dean smoking on set has great lighting. It is shadowed in a way that you cannot see his face as if he is ashamed or has no identity, yet you can still feel the emotion.

Bert Stern's 1962 Vogue photo is very eye-catching to me. In the action of putting the glass to her lips,  the drink matches the darkness of her shirt, the earring matches the bracelet, and the hair creates great texture.

1978 photo taken by Seiichi Furuya in Graz, Austria is a great hand photo, but it is not the hand that makes the photo; it is the out of focus reflection of the face.

1991-2000
1998 work by Astrid Klein is very different because of its shape. Having two photos to look on metal, the main focus is on a great photo of a man facing a mirror.

2001-Present
2003 photograph taken by Thomas Joshua Cooper of Broken Boulder in the Late Afternoon Sun has a great quality of light and shadow without any interruption from pure rock.

This 2004 photograph by Candida Hofer has great color and symmetry. The way the couch matches the curtains while also contrasting the rug creates a great affect.

2006 Carlo Bevilacqua photo called Piazza Affari is a photo I could see myself creating. I love puddle reflection, and this one has a very good affect with adding in the building instead of a blank sky.
